Spicy Food, the Stuff of Nightmares: Do you have nightmares after wolfing down sriracha? The heat could be to blame, as new evidence suggests that eating a spicy meal before you go to bed can trigger weird dreams. In fact, eating anything close to bedtime can make dreaming more likely, since the act increases the body’s metabolism and temperature, leading to more brain activity and action during rapid eye movement sleep, or REM. Some people are also more sensitive to the chemical compositions of spicy foods, which would make them more susceptible to dreams of being chased by a scary pile of dan-dan noodles.
