What Does “Fresh” Mean, Anyway?: If you’re interested in the debate over what constitutes fresh food, check out this recent piece in Slate (even if you’re not, it’s still worth a gander, if only to see a TV ad for Taco Bell from the 1970s). The article raises a important question: So many fast food chains claim that their food is “fresh,” but what does it even mean? Establishments such as Arby’s, Subway, and Domino’s have rebranded themselves based on the word, and Subway has since become the largest chain in the world. In truth, though, it turns out that “fresh” is more about marketing and less about local, recently harvested ingredients.
