Chinese Obesity Rates Rising: A long history of food traditions is not, apparently, enough to stop China from catching the obesity epidemic that has become a problem in developed countries all over the world. According to a piece by Bee Wilson in The Telegraph there are now about 100 million obese people in China, five times as many as there were in 2002. And a medical study from 2010 estimated that 9.7% of China’s population now has diabetes, a disease that goes hand-in-hand with obesity. Here’s hoping that the traditional, healthy diet can win out over the influx of Western fast foods and the Chinese’s increasingly unhealthy eating habits.
