Booze and Diet Soda: A Potent Potion: A new study in the journal Alcoholism found that when alcohol was mixed with diet soda the drinks were more potent than when they were mixed with non-diet soda. Cecile A Marczinksi, assistant professor at Northern Kentucky University and a lead investigator of the study, said that “Participants who drank diet soda with vodka had blood alcohol contents as high as 18 percent more than when sugar-containing mixers were used.” The reason for this startling fact is that drinks with sugar in them stimulate your stomach like food does, and eating delays the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream. But because diet sodas don’t have sugar in them, your body doesn’t treat it the drinks as food, so alcohol gets absorbed immediately.
