Libraries: Lenders of Books, DVDs, and Now Seeds: The library in Basalt, Colorado, is trying to stay alive in the digital age by loaning out a product that cannot be turned into zeros and ones: the seeds of plants. How does this work? With a library card you can get a packet of seeds, grow produce from them, harvest the new seeds, and then return them to the library so that others can benefit from their bounty. Of course, the library still offers books, CDs, and DVDs, but as the library’s director, Barbara Milnor, says, “you have to be fleet of foot if you’re going to stay relevant, and that’s what the big problem is with a lot of libraries, is relevancy.” This new approach plants seeds of not only knowledge, but also carrots.
