Why Are Avocados the Food of the Super Bowl?: Guacamole is to the Super Bowl as turkey is to Thanksgiving. Yet the avocado season isn’t even close to being in full swing, with the fruits picked in February often tasting watery and less-than-ripe. Will Brokaw, the farmer behind Will’s Avocados, says “Everybody would be better off if the Super Bowl was delayed until early March.” As a result, the avocados we eat during the big game come mostly from Mexico or Chile. And just how many green, creamy, luscious fruits does our insatiable desire for guacamole require this year? About 79 million pounds were purchased in the weeks before the game, which is an 8 million pound increase over last year. Avocados: the real winner of the Super Bowl.
