Lettuce: The Quiet Killer?: No, not quite, but leafy greens are the most frequent cause of food-borne contamination in the U.S., according to a newly released government report. The study, conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found that produce sickens about 4.4 million people annually. That’s 23% of the 9.6 million reported cases a year. This doesn’t mean you should stop eating your greens, though: while fruits and veggies tend to carry more pathogens, those found on poultry and meat are much more deadly. But don’t let this study scare you off: Keep channeling Popeye and eat your spinach.
