Fake Foods Masquerading as Real Foods: Beware the Pomegranate Juice: A new investigation by the non-profit food fraud detectives at the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention found that many foods, from olive oil to spices to fruit juice, contain fake ingredients. Marcus Lipp, senior director for Food Standards for the independent lab in Maryland, told ABC News that pomegranate juice in particular was a repeat offender. The juice “is a high-value ingredient and a high-priced ingredient…it can be adulterated with other food juices…additional sugar, or just water and sugar.” So think twice before you shell out for that bottle at the supermarket—you might be better off just buying apple juice.
