Does Your Food Affect Your Medication?: A new study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal has found that an increasing number of prescription drugs can trigger dangerous interactions with grapefruit and grapefruit juice. The citrus can both increase and decrease how much of a drug is absorbed into one’s bloodstream, thanks to a furanocoumarin (say that ten times fast), an organic chemical compound that plants produce and are toxic to various types of predators (usually bugs). So while grapefruit is great, only dive into one if you you’re sure that your meds don’t interact poorly with the fruit.
