New Cooking Equipment: Time Savers or Dangerous Tools?: With the recent boom in cooking show and food blogs, less-practiced cooks have been taking to the kitchen and injuring themselves (and their pride) in the process. Many who don’t know the proper safety precautions to take when using devices like the immersion blender, the mandoline slicer, the meat grinder, and other devices are using them anyways, with sometimes dreadful results. The proof? Emergency room visits due to slicers and choppers in New York City are up by over a thousand cases since 2001. The takeaway? Beware the menacing mandoline.
