American Single-Malt Whiskeys: A Shot at the Big Leagues: Whiskeys, until now, have been the toast of Scotland: Glenlivet, Balvenie, Talisker, Macallan, the list goes on. Well, move over, Scotland, because the spirits of America are coming for you. The Balcones Distillery in Waco, Texas recently beat out 9 Scotland-made whiskeys in a blind taste test. The panel of judges was comprised of British spirits experts; the tasting marks the first time an American whiskey won Best in Glass, a five-year-old competition to find the best whiskey released in each year. Balcone’s winning booze was described as “brash, robust, and full of flavor.” Just like Americans, don’t you think?
