Reusable Bags: Not As Saintly As We Thought: Turns out that while reusable bags might save landfills from extra plastic, they won’t save shoppers from germs. Because those who use nylon or cotton reusable bags hardly ever wash them (and may use them to tote other thing, like soccer cleats, around when they aren’t grocery shopping), the bags are actually hosts to lots of food-borne pathogens and other nasty germs. This isn’t to say you should ditch your earth-friendly carryalls entirely; just think twice before you put your grapes in the same bag in which you last carried your hamburgers. In this case, the washing machine is your friend.
