Half of the World’s Food Gets Thrown Away: The Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London released a new report claiming that as much as half of the world’s food, about two billion tons, ends up being thrown away. Reasons cited for this massive waste were poor infrastructure and storage facilities, overly strict sell-by dates, and consumer fussiness: 30% of the UK’s produce doesn’t get harvested because the vegetables and fruits simply don’t “look good enough.” The story gives new, and upsetting, meaning to the term “picky eater.”
