International Dispute Over France’s “Nutella Amendment”: The French government is in talks to implement a fat tax, which would impose a 300% tax increase on items that don’t conform to the EU’s “nutritional profile.” One of those items is palm oil, which makes up for 20% of Europeans’ beloved spread, Nutella. This has kicked off quite the international controversy. The Malaysian Palm Oil Council has declared that palm oil is a “healthy, natural and important product,” while Nutella’s maker, Ferrero, insists there will be no change in the recipe if the tax is imposed.
